THE Canal & River Trust wants to recruit new volunteers to welcome visitors to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Burnley.

The Trust now runs a public welcome station from its base in Rosegrove, Burnley, and needs volunteers to meet and greet boaters, walkers, cyclists and anglers.

More visitors attracted

As it is the waterway's 200th anniversary., the Trust is hoping the canal's higher profile will result in even more visitors being attracted to the longest canal in Britain.

Matt Taylor, the North West Volunteer Coordinator, explained:

"We are looking for people with a few spare hours each week who are enthusiastic about their local area and enjoy talking to people. We don't expect volunteers to have an expert knowledge of the canal. Full training will be given.

"This is a great way to meet new people and play a valuable role in helping visitors enjoy themselves. This is a seasonal role and if you enjoy being in the outdoors in the summer months, there are few pleasanter places to be than by our wonderful waterways."
