OCTOBER well showed the condition of failures on the system.

With many failings, as Keith Gudgin reports.

Pump failure

It started on the 3rd of the month with a pump failure on Fosse Top Lock on the Grand Union Canal.

Then on the 6th the power failed to the Low Lane Swing Bridge (pictured) on the New Junction Canal.

Then the 9th and 14th saw two failures on the Lee Navigation with a fault with the power system to the gate of Tottenham Lock on the 9th and then on the 14th Pickett's Lock failing.

Huddersfield Broad Canal was next on the 14th with locks 1 to 9 closed owing o problems with paddles.

Gate failed to open

Then it was the North Stratford Canal that suffered the gate on Lock 17 failing to open on the 15th.

A stoppage on the 15th was on the Huddersfield Narrow with two paddles failing on Lock 16.

All within just two weeks...
