Two major milestones have been achieved over the last couple of weeks on the Whitchurch Breach, writes Alan Yates.
Pumps relocated
With six-into-one manifolds on each side of the canal at Whitchurch Marina, the system suffered from considerable flow restriction, resulting in excessive diesel consumption.
Additionally, ABC Leisure will no doubt be glad to see the back of the noise and regain their yard space.
The photograph shows the pumps in their new location adjacent to Bridge 31A. Thanks to a more efficient pipe routing, only seven pumps are now required, down from the eight previously used.
Triaxial Grid laid
Once the initial cover layer of aggregate was in place, a layer of triaxial geogrid was laid, followed by two more lifts of 6F5 aggregate. Each 300 mm layer was thoroughly compacted using the heavy roller.
Next steps
With the base layer now raised to the level of the first bench (step), the coming week should mark the beginning of visible, main-structure reconstruction at last.
Thanks as always to Kieran & Josh for their excellent drone flying.
