AT PRESENT THE Kennet & Avon Canal is closed at Bath No 1 Tunnel.
Daylight shining through
As workmen digging above have gone right through into the tunnel roof with daylight now shining through the hole they have caused.
This means the navigation through the tunnel has been stopped as its roof is no longer secure.
Canal & River Trust together with structural engineers are currently evaluating the masonry stability of the tunnel as the A36 passes within yards of the hole, making it completely unsafe.
It was Volker Highways, whose workers broke through the canal tunnel roof during the widening of the the pavement by the A36.
Rarity of the damage
Such is the rarity of the damage that it is not yet known what measures will have to be taken to make the tunnel safe.
Until it is decided what measures have to be taken to make the tunnel safe, there can be no information when it can be reopened to navigation.
