A ROAD bridge over the Lancaster Canal has been damaged by a vehicle, with the waterway now closed at the site.

A vehicle struck the parapet of the bridge knocking it into the canal yesterday, which is causing an obstruction with boats unable to make passage, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Road and canal closed

This is Hest Bank Bridge (118)  above Lancaster, with both the road and the canal currently closed.

Coping stones and debris landed in the waterway and on to the towpath, and the extent of the damage has yet to be ascertained.
