SO MANY young people have now drowned in the Avon at Bath that a memorial is now planned to remember those who lost their lives.

It is hoped that in addition to being  a place of quiet meditation on the river bank it will act as a warning to others in an attempt to prevent further deaths, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Planing permission granted

There will be 18 steps leading down to the memorial by the river, that has been granted planning permission by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

It is a church in Bath together with the family of Sam Amin, who drowned, that hope to raise the £25,000 needed to build the monument to those who have also drowned in the Avon.

Ninth victim

There was a call to improve safety after the river  claimed it ninth victim last month, when Henry Burke, another student who was drunk, having been thrown out of a club drowned in the river (Still they drown).

An official appeal will be launched on Saturday, 10th December at 12pm when the Amin family, Bath Mayor Paul Crossley and others will attend a memorial walk along the banks of the river from Avon Street Car Park to Pultney Weir.

12 drowned

It was after Sam Amin, 18, fell into the river after a night out in Bath in September 2014 that the railing were installed all along the river, but these have not stopped the drownings, with 12 young people, mostly drunk after nights out, drowning in the river.

The memorial will be near Churchill Bridge, and after consultation with other families who have lost relatives, the inscription will include a general remembrance of all those who have lost their lives in the river, that will be a place of quite meditation and a reminder to prevent further deaths, it is stated.

Call for action

A father of one of the victim's has called for 'action to prevent more lives being lost in Bath's Avon'. Though what action is not stated. The picture shows the railing first being installed, that have not stopped the deaths.

Surely the best action to prevent further deaths in the river lies solely with the victims themselves...
