CAMBRIDGE City Council is proposing to introduce new rules concerning the moorers at present on the river-side wall on the Cam in the city.

Mostly resident boaters, they could lose their moorings following a consultation concerning the council's new mooring policy to either clear all the boats from the wall or introduce mooring fees based on length.

Free moorings

As this was being considered at a council meeting, the resident boaters and supporters were chanting outside objecting to the proposals, knowing that should the new ruling come into force they could loose their homes or have to pay mooring fees.

The protesters were even using a megaphone to make their objections heard inside the council chamber, but the council want to clear the wall, after many complaints from nearby house owners over what many see as a blot on the river with noise from boat engines and generators and some boats being in poor condition, whilst others believe the moorers should by paying for the privilege as others do.
