THE Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust are hoping for a lottery grant to enable them to re-open the disused Wappenshall Wharf, to further the restoration of the canals.
Though once a busy wharf on the waterway, it was infilled in the early 1960s, but luckily not built upon, with the original buildings still standing, Alan Tilbury tells us.
£1.8 millions
Members of the Trust have already raised over £200,000 towards the restoration but hope to get money from the lottery to make up the £1.8 millions needed to complete the full restoration of the wharf.
Should they managed to fulfil the project, members hope that this would create a knock-on effect to be able to get further money for the restoration of the waterways.
House exhibits
An advantage of the restoration is that the buildings could house some of the many Thomas Telford exhibits held by the Ironbridge Museums Trust, which it has no means of showing to the public.
The buildings are in good condition and could easily be used for other things such as a café and /or meeting places.
