A LARGE SECTION OF THE Leeds & Liverpool Canal towpath has been upgraded as a cycling route.
And is now officially opened, Janet Friend reports.
New smooth surface
The towpath has been widened with a new smooth surface along the Aire Valley of the waterway, and is part of the National Cycle Network Route 66, that stretches from the Bingley Five Rise Locks.
Passing a number of locks it is now advisable for boaters to take extra care as many cyclists enjoy speeding down the steep section by the lock connecting the two pounds, where they can meet boaters having secured their boats and walking up to work the locks. Particularly those longer sections by the five (pictured) and three rise locks.
The new route was officially opened on Saturday 8th August, with locals, councillors, and invited visitors gathered to mark the occasion, with Sean McGinley, regional director at the Canal & River Trust, telling:
Much loved walking and cycling
"It was great to see visitors enjoying using the newly resurfaced towpath, which provides much-loved walking and cycling routes for the local community and visitors."
"We’re delighted to have delivered this towpath improvement scheme, in partnership with Walk Wheel Cycle Trust and Bradford Council, providing better access to 'one of the wonders of the waterways', Bingley Five Rise Locks."
