BROADCASTER John Sergeant is again taking to the canals in a second series of Barging Around Britain, but says he is keeping away from boating enthusiasts who are complaining of him using the word barge instead of narrowboat and suchlike.
This time he starts off on the Peak Forest Canal, but as in the previous series his time will be spent not on the waterways but visiting what he feels are interesting places and people by the canals, Alan Tilbury tells us.
Meant to be having fun
Interviewed by the Daily Mail, John explained:
"I'm certainly trying to keep it away from the boating enthusiasts, otherwise there's a tendency to make it precious—'Oh you're calling it a barge, are you, and not a narrowboat', all that sort of thing. This isn't meant to be big-time television, this is meant to be having fun on the water, messing about in boats and bringing people into it in all their variety."
In the first episode on the Peak Forest Canal he works on a sweet factory production line and later enters the boxing ring with local boxing legend Ricky Hatton.
