IT IS less than 12 months since I reported on the beginnings of the new 'super marina' at Onley on the Oxford Canal, with much pegging out both on the towpath (for the entrance) and in the fields adjoining, writes Kevin McNiff.
Today however, all the pegs have either disappeared, or where visible, are lying on the ground. I haven't noticed anything in the waterways media about the project so can we hope that common sense has prevailed and the plans have been shelved.
The worrying bit for locals may be that it will be subject to a change of use in a retrospective planning application. There are signs on the land where there is a signed footpath warning of 'Newt' crossings. These weren't there last year though.
Location, location, location!
...Is definitely a key factor in marina occupancy and down in Cropredy, the owner is waiting for the result of a planning application for an extension for another 100 berths with the existing 249 almost full.
However I have just learnt that the application for an extension to the marina has been withdrawn, even though Cherwell District Council were going to approve it, according to The Banbury Guardian.
Not many boats
Even in the week after Easter we've not seen many boats on the move between Cropredy and Braunston; the usually crammed Armco along the Braunston pound is almost boat free! There are signs that more boats are being put on brokerage where owners are reaching the point where they are unable to get out and about as age and infirmity take hold. It's also clear that CaRT's determined action to ensure Continuous Cruisers do move is having the desired effect in some areas. Long may that continue!
Idiot Sign
Locking down the Atherstone Flight last week, I was puzzled by a sign on the side pond at Lock 5. Being the only one that actually has an operating paddle which we use to save water, why have Central Shires put up the notice to say that it must only be used by waterway staff for water resource control! Isn't that what a side pond is meant to do?
Perhaps that is another reason why Danny Green has departed his job. I will continue to use the side pond as it was designed, unless someone puts a chain on it.
Inglorious mud
Atherstone Visitor Moorings below Lock 5 have gained some rings since we were here last year. If only some more could have been done to the towpath however. The wet Spring is ruining miles of towpath not being resurfaced for the betterment of cyclists in the Midlands. It's quite impossible to avoid yards of muddy slurry around bridge holes and mooring spots. While it would be unfair to task CaRT with wholesale upgrades, surely town and recognised mooring sites could be treated for the benefit of all 'stakeholders' so we get a share of it. Perhaps a volunteer job for the Coventry Canal Society? I'd be happy to pitch in later in the year.
Cropredy extension withdrawn
