Macc to be cleared

AFTER so many complaints of the state of overhanging trees and vegetation on the Macclesfield Canal, (Into the Jungle) volunteers have been enlisted by Canal & River Trust to clear the waterway.

Boaters have been complaining of scratched boats as they attempt to negotiate the many bridges that have overhanging trees and vegetation, that have not been touched, some believe for years.

20 miles section

A team of volunteers has been enlisted to help clear overgrown trees and vegetation from alongside a 20 miles section of both the Macclesfield and Upper Peak Forest canals.

It is a six day operation, with the Trust overseeing the operation that will make navigation along the waterway less fraught for those who  care for their boats. It will start on Sunday 14th September on the Bosley to Macclesfield section, continue throughout the week through Bollington, Higher Poynton, Marple, New Mills and finish on Friday 19th September at Whaley Bridge.

The Macclesfield Canal Society will provide the bulk of the volunteers, with CaRT providing a work boat with a wood chipper, qualified operators and all the necessary tools and safety equipment to allow the volunteers to tackle the overgrown trees and vegetation on the off side.
