Work on Llangollen Canal bridge

WORK is now well underway on the Red Bridge (58) at Ellesmere on the Llangollen Canal.

Though the local authority told that it would have to be closed during the August holiday period for repair due to its condition, Canal & River Trust persuaded the local authority to postpone the repair to the underside of the bridge until November. (CaRT keeps Llangollen open).

Major work

As can be seen from Sheila Halsall's photograph taken on Sunday, major work is being undertaken on the arch of the bridge, and she told us:

"The waterway is open. I think that was part of the issue. The initial proposal meant that the canal would be closed at the height of the season. That has been avoided. It's very busy or at least it was on Sunday when I was there."

Open until November

It is expected that the waterway will remain open until November, though the scale of the work on the arch, as seen from Shelia's photograph shows there could be a health and safety issue to boats passing underneath.

The bridge will be closed for traffic for nine weeks and to boating for two weeks.
