Cash for Wey & Arun

THE Inland Waterways Association has presented a £500 donation to the Wey & Arun Canal Trust to help with its restoration.

This was from the Guildford & Reading Branch of the Inland Waterways Association, and Trustee Philip Oliver told that further than helping with the restoration will go towards helping provide flood protection for houses in Bramley.

Reconstructing the canal

It was Robin Higgs who presented the £500 donation to Philip of the Wey & Arun Canal Trust at the Trust's recent AGM, with Philip stating the money will go towards funding work to reconnect the canal with the Wey at Gun's Mouth Island and reconstruction of the canal through Bramley, and added:

"I am delighted with the donation. We have had a major flood study done on the proposed canal route around Bramley, where we hope to be able to get permission to use Cranleigh Waters. If we can gain permission for this, then the canal could help provide flood alleviation to the 60 or so properties in Bramley that flood quite regularly."

Philip predicted that this work will take at least another year to complete and will be followed by a series of four appeals for funds to carry out the construction for each stretch round Bramley.
