THE plan to install a hydroelectric plant at  Oxford's Osney Lock Weir on the Thames will go ahead as it has been confirmed that enough cash has been raised to cover its cost.

After just 10 days of offering shares in the project, the small community group Osney Lock Hydro, raised the £250,000 to construct the plant to coincide with the renovations to the weir by the Environment Agency.

50 homes

The group obtained planning permission for the water turbine that has been 12 years in planning, and it is estimated it will generate enough power for 50 homes

It is expected that other similar schemes will follow, harnessing the power from the Thames.
