THE condition of the Basingstoke Canal means that it can always do with extra cash for its maintenance, being council owned, so any extra is very welcome.

Extra cash is being generated by the trip boat John Pinkerton with its pleasure trips along the waterway, with the income going towards its  upkeep, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Second largest

Even with today's financial problems, during last year it managed to generate £27,700 profit for the waterway, the second largest amount ever in the narrowboat's 35 years history.

The boat operates from Colt Hill Wharf at Odiham, and it was at the annual general meeting of the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Cruises Ltd that the profit was revealed.
