Problems removing crane

IT WAS very easy for the crane to topple into the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Apperley, but it seems a much greater problem getting it out.

It was on the 9th February when the crane that was standing on insecure ground working on Dobson's Lock toppled into the waterway, when the ground gave way, but it still has not been removed.

Stopped since November

Together with delayed winter maintenance stopping the canal since November, Steve Wright at Applerley Bridge Marina is demanding compensation through lack of trade owing to boats unable to move.

CaRT however have told him it will not pay compensation, as delays are normal in winter, so he is considering taking the matter to the Waterway Ombudsman.

Delayed further

Not only is the replacement of the lock gates behind schedule due to the weather, but the crane falling in has delayed it even further.

A specialist contractor is being brought in to attempt to remove the crane, that is sinking further in the mud with a spokesman for Cart remarking that it was an 'unusual challenge'.
