New hope for Sheffield Basin

THE failed council plans to regenerate Sheffield Basin on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation are being taken up by a private company.

It was three years ago, as reported in narrowboatworld that Sheffield City Council planned to regenerate the West Bar area of the city that  included Sheffield Basin, using the company Castlemore Securities, that went under in the economic downturn, Alan Tilbury tells us.

But now, Urbo, that is also involved with a Bradford Canal regeneration and the yet to be started £300 millions Chesterfield Waterside scheme,  have successfully applied to restart the scheme.

However, it is understood the project will take 10 to 15 years, and may need compulsory purchase powers to acquire all the land required for the regeneration.

The original plans are being scrapped, as the city's master plan now requires more office space in addition to retail and leisure facilities.
