CANAL & RIVER TRUST is advertising for a senior project manager to oversee the restoration of the Anderton Boat Lift.
That has been closed all year to boat traffic following a mechanical failure, Janet Friend reports.
Stopped all boat movement
Together with the failed Marsh Lock this has stopped all boat movement between the Weaver and the rest of the system.
The cost of this latest repair to the boat lift is stated at £15 millions. Yet it was completely rebuilt in 2001, as pictured, at less than half this amount—£7 millions.
Then later the hydraulic rams had to be replaced, as shown, but it is not known if they will have to be replaced yet again.
The trust it seems does not have anyone capable of overseeing the latest restoration, so is advertising for a project manager who will ideally have degree level qualifications in civil engineering or surveying, as well as qualifications in project management.
On time and within budget
His or her role will be the delivering of the Anderton Boat Lift project ‘on time and within budget’, according to the job description, the trust adding:
“This will involve highly developed project management skills, the ability to work with consultants and contractors, and a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
“These include ecologists, heritage advisors, engineers and operations teams.”
The new project manager's role is advertised as remotely based, though the post holder will be expected to travel to Northwich on a regular basis, so should ideally be nearby, at a salary of up to £46,000 a year depending on experience, along with a £425 per month car allowance and a competitive defined contributions pension scheme.
As an incentive the person can fish the trust's waterway network nationwide, free of charge!
