THERE IS TO BE a closure on the Coventry Canal at Atherstone.

Demolition

This is due to the demolition of a building, Keith Gudgin reports.

This is the dilapidated former Britannia Works building, that is located offside above the Atherstone Flight, with the navigation closed during the works.

The building being in such a condition that it needs to be taken down safely, so there will be a stoppage Monday 16th February to Sunday 8th March to allow the works to be carried out with care.

Customer facilities

However, the local customer facilities above Atherstone Top Lock will not be within the stoppage so will be available throughout this period.

Though not told, the moorings at the top of the flight will be closed as they are opposite the actual demolition. The picture by permission of English Heritage was taken in 1975, with the building now in a much worse condition.
