THE repair to the bed of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal at Llangattock has been completed, and the canal reopened for the start of the season.

The canal was drained immediately the leak occurred, allowing repairs to get underway without delay. Though in the same area as the former breach, it is stated that the leak was unrelated.

Waterway Manager Nick Worthington stated at a fact finding visit by Brecon & Radnorshire MP Roger Williams and Llangattock Councillor Jeff Holmes :

"I'm keenly aware the work affected the start of the visitor season and we have apologised to everyone whose holiday plans were disrupted.

"2009 saw record visitor numbers flock to the UK's resurgent waterway network, with the number of adult visitors nationwide topping 13 million. Around 3m people visit the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal every year, bringing in around £18m annually to the regional economy."
