Waiting for permission

THOUGH a bridge over the Rochdale Canal at Todmorden is is urgent need of repair, work cannot start.

It is a Grade II listed bridge, and even though it is sinking, planning permission is required before anything can be done.

British Waterways Senior Project Manager Clive Mitchell, explained:

"The works consist of repairs to underpin the bridge abutment and to repair the arch using concealed stainless steel anchors which have been carefully designed and specified to be sympathetic to the historic fabric to avoid any visual impact on this historic structure."

However it will not be until March before Calderdale Council will make a decision.  In the meantime the condition of the bridge worsens.
