Lucky escape on the Soar

INVESTIGATIONS are going on into how two teenagers were allowed to take to the flooded Soar in Leicester from the Outdoor Pursuits centre on a raft.

The  raft was spotted empty caught by the strong current, and the emergency services were quickly alerted.

But having realised they had no control over the raft, one of the boys managed to get to the bank, and the other was rescued from the river by the fire service, with a spokesman remarking:

"It was a very lucky escape. If they had been further out  and not near the bank it might have been a different story as the river was flowing quite strongly and at first there was no sign of the two boys or the raft."

Two men died earlier this month after they fell through the ice at Watermead Park in Leicester.
