BOATERS on the southern section of the Staffs & Worcs Canal cannot help but notice the mass of flowers by the side of the waterway near Kingswinford.

This outstanding display is the work of John Massey who has spent a large part of the past 25 years maturing a patch of scrubland into such a mass of colour, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Seen from the canal

In addition to native blooms and trees are mixed more exotic species, and though hidden away, can be clearly seen by boaters passing on the canal.

John tells that the garden is his retired life, working away on it most days and often all day, with its result clearly showing his endeavours.

As a retired nurseryman he obviously knows his plants, as can be seen, with not only familiar favourites from all over the world, but also with informal borders, havens and rock pools, giving colour all the year round.
