THOUGH it was five months ago that the floods caused havoc on the Rochdale Canal, the latest information from CaRT is that it still cannot give a date when the navigation will re-open.

Work is taking place on the towpaths, walls, lock structures and repairs, and dredging taking place to clear the debris. Tomorrow, Friday, a further section of the waterway will be re-opened, extending it towards Lock 15, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Date cannot be given

Work is still required on both Elland Bridge and Crowther Bridge, but is expected to take over four weeks. However a date cannot be given when the landslide is cleared and the breach repaired.

This long stoppage, coupled with stoppages on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal has caused many boaters to cruise the Trent & Mersey Canal via the Trent, but some are now trapped by the further  stoppage on the Macclesfield Canal.
