Work at Hillmorton

TWO of our contributors have locked through the Hillmorton Flight, that has undergone repairs, allowing boats passage.

Middle lock closed

I came through Hillmorton on Thursday, David Hymers writes, with the nearside middle lock closed because a CaRT team of three had been replacing a rotten balance beam on one of the bottom gates.

They were just finishing off and I imagine the lock is now open. Both bottom locks were in use, there was a notice by the top gate saying that a paddle was defective and users should make sure it was fully wound down. In fact, I had no trouble with it. There were no queues. I imagine that the stoppage had not been notified as with the paired locks at this location the canal was not closed.

No major problems

Roger Olver also locked though on the Thursday and tied below at 12.30pm. He tells us there were no major problems, the lock beam replacement on one of the middle locks was almost complete—no idea what other problem your contributor was writing about.

Very well maintained and easy locks to use (certainly the ones I used to descend the flight).
