Dave Berry helps the Chesterfield

SINGER Dave Berry will perhaps be best known for his hits including Little Things, in the 1960s, but is now a hit with the Chesterfield Canal Trust.

Earlier this month Dave cycled the full length of the Chesterfield Canal from Chesterfield to West Stockwith on the River Trent, 46 miles in all, to raise funds for the Trust.

Donations

Rod Auton of the Trust tells us that you can support Dave's ride by making donations via the Chesterfield Canal Trust website (just search for Chesterfield Canal); alternatively you could hand in your donation at Tapton Lock Visitor Centre or Hollingwood Hub. Please mark any donations as Dave Berry. In the picture are Ian Scott, George Bunting, Rod Auton, Jeff Troops and Dave Berry.

On the ride, Dave was accompanied by two friends Jeff Troops and Ian Stott, with Trust members George Bunting and Rod Auton, accompanying them for the first 18 miles to Shireoaks, where the group stopped for some well earned refreshment at Laura's Coffee Shop. In the picture below is Laura Elliot, Dave Berry and Kath Auton, the Trust's Membership Secretary.

Hard going

Of the ride Dave explained:

"We had a really wonderful day, though it was hard going towards the end on the grass towpath. The canal is really beautiful and I recommend anyone to walk or cycle along the towpath."

He lives locally and first made contact with the Chesterfield Canal Trust whilst taking his granddaughter on a Santa Special cruise last Christmas. He was impressed by the work that their volunteers do and decided to help.

Still working

Dave may not have appeared in the charts recently, but he is still working hard. In October, he will start the Sensational 60's Experience 50th Anniversary Tour with the Union Gap, the Ivy League, the Swinging Blue Jeans and Herman's Hermits. This will run to over 60 performances across Britain. For further information, go to his website www.cryinggame.co.uk.

Kath Auton, Membership Secretary for the Chesterfield Canal Trust, enthused:

"We are enormously grateful to Dave and his friends. We hope that lots of people will donate to the Trust in support of their wonderful achievement. We are delighted that Dave has said that he would like to be involved with the work of the Trust in the future."
