Live pony dumped in canal

A PONY has been found dumped in the Oxford Canal near Rugby to drown, for it is believed it was still alive when dragged in.

A dog walker saw the body of the pony in the waterway just off the bank, and immediately called the emergency services, with an RSPCA inspector explaining that as the body was still warm it had most likely been dragged in to drown, Mick Fitzgibbons tells us.

Scuff marks

This was reinforced by the fact there were clumps of hair at the nearby lay-by and scuff marks on the towpath where the pony was discovered, as though it had been dragged in to the water. There was also a rope left on the bank.

The RSPCA Inspector,  Louise Labram, told that the ground was badly disturbed, as though it had been struggling, leading her to believe it was alive when it entered the water.

The society is appealing for witnesses.
