Canal Basin for Aylesbury Arm

Published: Friday, 05 October 2012

THE Aylesbury Canal Society now has a 999 year lease on a piece of land bordering the offside of the Aylesbury Arm with planning permission to build a canal basin with all facilities and a club premises.

This includes sufficient funds to complete the building of the moorings with all the necessary facilities and most of the building, and it is  hoped to start digging in about a month, but progress will rather depend on the winter weather.

Good protection

However the basin will be overshadowed by the new Travelodge and Waitrose on the adjacent site, though it should offer good protection during the winter but will be depressing in the Spring, Bryan Barnes, Chairman of the Society observes, telling that with funding permitting he expects the building with all its extra facilities to be completed in November 2013.

Arm Closure

With a serious leak above Lock 11, the rebuilding of Lock 4 (pictured) and the replacement of the cill on Lock 14, the Arm  will be closed from October 15th to just before Christmas, so the  annual firework party will not be able to take place, though there is a similar local even in the town.
