Armed police in boater stand-off

Published: Thursday, 15 March 2012

ARMED police were in a stand-off with a boater last night (Wednesday) at Sandiacre on the Erewash Canal.

The waterway was closed-off as around 20 officers surrounded the narrowboat where it is claimed a man was holding a woman hostage, perhaps at gun point, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Cordoned-off

The area around the Plough Inn was also cordoned off as officers, some armed, negotiated with the boater locked in his boat moored just off Town Street, with the customers detained in the pub for their own safety.

It is understood the police were alerted to the situation by postings on the networking websites Facebook and Twitter that the man had a gun and was holding a woman hostage.

Ambulances

Ambulances were present at the scene in case of injuries, but later the people in the pub were led away by police officers.

Police officers were called in from neighbouring forces to help with the operation and dog units were also present. Late last night a spokesman for the police stated that the incident was still ongoing, but no one had been injured as no shots had been fired.
