Another 'Narrow' Open Day

Published: Thursday, 16 February 2012

THERE is to be another chance for the public to see inside a drained lock on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal this month.

There is to be an Open Day at Lock 31W—Geoffrey Dickens Lock—near to the Diggle entrance of the Standedge Tunnel on Monday 12th March. The picture shows Alan Tilbury and Jan Green working down the locks from Standedge Tunnel in 2011.

15 locks

There has already been an Open Day at Lock 40E in January as part of British Waterways' winter maintenance programme where 15 locks are having new lock gates fitted or repairs carried out.

Members of the public are being given the opportunity to see inside the drained lock, watch British Waterways' staff at work and chat to them.

Date changed

Graham Lea, British Waterways' Maintenance Manager for the Manchester & Pennine region explained why the date had been changed:

"The recent spell of bad weather has meant that our works programme has been changed in order to get all 15 lock projects completed by the end of March. We apologise for any inconvenience caused but we hope that as many people will still be able to make it to view this skilled work."

The Huddersfield Narrow Canal through the Pennines is the most heavily locked waterway in the country
