Good news for Cromford

The dredging of part of the Cromford Canal is good news for the Friends of the Cromford Canal, writes Brian Holmes.

The Officers and members of the Friends continue to work hard for the good and criticism of the aims and objectives will not further the cause.

The aims

The aims and objectives of the Friends of the Cromford Canal are 'restoration, reconstruction preservation and maintenance of the Cromford Canal together with its associated buildings, towing path, structures and the conservation of its natural character as a navigable inland waterway system for the benefit of the public'.

The dredging will not bring many boats to the area but one trip boat on the dredged length will bring visitors who might just be interested in joining in with the Friends.

Visitor Attraction

The Huddersfield Canal was opened in sections and had a trip boat at Uppermill and a floating tearoom at Slaithwaite for many years before the chance of through navigation was available because it was a visitor attraction.

It still is a visitor attraction and maybe the businesses and jobs that were forecast have not materialised. The canal runs short of water, and delays are inevitable but boaters still rise to the challenge of the '74'.

Need to admire

We may not be around when the Cromford reopens for navigation but there is a need to admire and support the people who put in the efforts and are determined to promote this bit of our heritage.
