Council takes tree reponsibility

THOUGH part of a tree by the River Great Ouse in Bedford fell over the towpath and into the waterway, the local council has taken responsibility for it.

It is usually theĀ  waterways authority that takes responsibility for fallen trees, but in this case 'for safety reasons' Bedford Borough Council has taken responsibility.

Bank damaged

The council will now fell the remaining section of the tree and also repair the bank that was also damaged.

Council engineers believe the tree fell due to bank erosion caused by the river, and it is understood that further such trees will have to be removed for safety.

The towpath along the length of the river is closed whilst work is undertaken.
