Body in car in canal

THOUGH search teams were unable to locate the car reported hitting the water of the Caledonian Canal at Muirtown Locks, eventually specialist equipment was brought in and the car was found—with a body inside.

It was a taxi driver who saw the 4x4 car go into the canal at speed yesterday (Wednesday) around noon, with both the Coastguard and fire fighters unable to locate the car.  The probe used by the fire fighters with a underwater camera, not being long enough, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Car discovered

It was later in the day when police divers from Grampian Police were brought in that the car was discovered in the deep canal, with a body inside.

Though there was originally doubt that a car had gone into the waterway, it was CCTV footage from a nearby taxi company that showed a vehicle being driven towards the canal, and subsequently skid marks were discovered.

The body of a man has now been removed, but not formally identified.
