Another boat builder goes

BOAT Builder Sagar Marine is the latest to go out of business, its owners having taken the decision to go into voluntary liquidation.

In this case it was expected, as people have been unable to contact the company by its website since the end of November, and it joins many other well known and established builders who have found the current economic climate too difficult to carry on, with very few people ordering boats, we hear from Mike Fretwell.

Broad beam

Sagar Marine, located on the broad Calder & Hebble Navigation at Brighouse, specialised in later years in broad beam boats, such as the one in the photograph,  and was one of the long established boat builders being in business over 30 years.

The owners, Stephen and Wendy Sagar, together with their sons, like many others, have been caught by the downturn in boating, and subsequent lack of business that they blame for having to go into liquidation. We understand that its suppliers have been paid, and no boater has lost anything by the closure, though the employees have lost their jobs.

Sagar Marine, as described in the past in narrowboatworld, was a company that built the entire boat, from the steel shell to all the interior fittings and painting, and won several awards for its quality.
