Gate delivered by boat

THE new top gate for Northbrook Lock on the Oxford Canal has completed the final leg of its journey by narrowboat.

The one-and-a-half tonne oak gate, made by British Waterways' workshop in Wakefield, travelled by road to the Nell Bridge Yard in Adderbury, where it was loaded onto a narrowboat, to complete its journey by water.

The new top gate is shown in the picture ready for lowering into position, with the old gate in the work boat.

The gate had come to the end of its 25-year lifespan, the replacement taking two days. As part of these works, repairs will also be made to the lock's cill, brickwork and walls.
