THE quick growing weed Floating Pennywort was back on the Lancaster Canal in Preston, with 10 tones a day having to be cleared from the waterway.

The canal was swamped by the weed, with the thick mat completely covering the water for an estimated one mile length, and that needed two British Waterways' teams to clear.

Multiply

It is the warm weather that once again encourages the weed, that needs only a small portion to multiply at an alarming rate, completely blocking the waterway.

We are told that the workers removed 10 tons a day until it was virtually cleared, with weevils being released into the water, that will devour the remaining weed.
