Posters by the Avon

POSTERS have now been put up in Bath warning of the dangers of walking by the river.

This follows a campaign after students fell into the river after a night out, with several drowning, the latest being James Bubear, that prompted the campaign.

Safe route

The poster shows a pint of beer and asks drinkers to 'plan a safe route home before you go out', with the Avon Fire and Rescue Service coordinating  the poster campaign with other organisations in the city.

We are told the service is called out about once a month to  water-related incidents.

Naomi Mackrill, of the University of Bath Students' Union, explained:

"We are encouraging students to plan in advance how they get home, to stay with their friends and behave responsibly. In particular we want to raise awareness about the potential dangers in and around the water at night, especially if they are under the influence of alcohol."

However, is has been raised that when under the influence of drink, people will hardly be taking notice of posters, and that the river should be fenced off.
