Canal ranger sought

BRITISH Waterways is on the lookout for a volunteer ranger who can bring that personal touch to the visitor hub of Audlem on the Shropshire Union Canal.

A spokesman relates that more than 11,000 boats pass through Audlem Lock Flight every year, while thousands of visitors pass through while enjoying recreational activities such as rambling, cycling and wildlife spotting.

Demand

The post has been created in response to this demand—which looks set to grow as visits to the waterways increase and canal holidays grow in popularity.

As British Waterways seeks to move to the third sector, it believes volunteer posts like this will give communities greater involvement in the running of their local canals and rivers.

Benefits

British Waterways Volunteer Co-ordinator Lucy Bowles explained:

"Audlem is the southern gateway into Cheshire via the Shropshire Union Canal and a vibrant visitor destination in its own right. The role offers personal health benefits with plenty of walking and some physical work assisting boaters through the locks."

"We're now into National Volunteer Week, which is aimed at celebrating the contribution made to society by volunteers and encouraging more people to take up this valuable work."

The successful applicant would be asked to dedicate a few hours every week, focusing on weekends and high season holiday periods when the waterway is at its busiest.
