THE PUBLISHED STOPPAGE on the Leicester Section of the Grand Union Canal has been extended.

It is now closed, Keith Gudgin reports.

The stoppage was for the closure from Kibworth Top Lock 18 to Kings Lock 38 starting next Monday 27th.  But it has now been brought forward with it now closed and will be for the whole weekend.

The trust tells this is in preparation for this closure, for higher than anticipated water demand has been experienced, placing additional pressure on water levels.

Allow water to recover

So to allow water levels to recover as much as possible ahead of the closure, the stretch between Kings Lock (pictured) and Kibworth will be temporarily closed over the weekend. As a result, the full navigation closure will now commence at 3.00pm on Tuesday 28 July.

It is hoped that this will be open to navigation for the two days of next Monday and Tuesday from 10am to 3pm, then the full closure will take place, but now this is 'until further notice'.
