THE BASINGSTOKE CANAL has become the latest victim of the prolonged lack of rain.
With two flights now closed to navigation.
The Brookwood Flight and the Deepcut Flight between locks 12 and 28, have been closed by its owners, Hampshire County Council together with Surrey County Council. The image shows Deepcut with lack of water.
Attempt to save water
Already the locks were only open to navigation for just three days a week in an attempt to save water, but are now closed completely.
This canal is particularly suseptable to closures with nearly all of the locks having been closed during the summers. In fact this has been its problem since it was restored in the 1990's.
Altogether there are just over 30 miles that are navigable with 29 locks.
