WORK IS UNDERWAY IN REPLACING the lock gates of the Diglis Small Lock on the Severn.
With work on time, Janet Friend reports.
Allow work to progress
The whole area is cleared and the lock empty of water to allow the work to progresses.
With Mark Abraham, construction manager at Canal & River Trust, explaining:
"The repairs to Diglis Small Lock are important.
"Not only will they help maintain the historic structure, but they will also deliver improvements for boaters using the lock for years to come.
"The lock is nearly 200 years old, so with its age, the impact of rising costs, and the pressures of climate change and more extreme weather, it’s vital that we keep it in good condition so it can continue to serve navigation on the river."
Will take eight weeks
The work will take around eight weeks and has been funded through £355,000 that has been raised by the trust.
Both the top and bottom oak gates are being replaced together with new safety ladders being installed.
The larger lock once allowed ships to reach a former oil depot in Worcester, while Diglis Small Lock was designed for smaller vessels.
