WILL YOUR GANG PLANK BE LONG ENOUGH indeed on the shallow Lancaster Canal?
The navigation was closed, but is now open with restrictions, Keith Gudgin reports, due to lack of water.
Our own experience on the canal was fraught with problems with mooring due to the very shallow depth near the towpath side bank, having to use a gang plank (that was provided) for the first time in around 30 years.
Over 40 miles pound
And it is by no means a short pound, the lack of water stretching from Bridge 11 to Bridge 177—over 40 miles!
Canal & River Trust tell that boaters are requested to navigate through the centre of the canal wherever possible to reduce the risk of grounding—good advice indeed.
It was bad enough for us when the pound was full, as there was no way of getting to the side, and we were stuck time and time again, and Beth just could not understand the plank. Official mooring points were few and far between.
