Canal as conservation area

THERE are plans to turn the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal into a designated conservation area.

Torfaen Council is seriously considering having the canal listed as a conservation area, believing it to be 'an important part of the landscape and heritage of the area'.

It is in the process of the decision going out for public consultations, with these having started on the 15th of this month and going on until the 26th at various locations.

The council is considering the possibility of recognising the special historical interest of the canal.

It is not known what effect this will have on boating should the council succeed in its quest to get the waterway listed, but we have been told that 'boating organisations have not been informed'.
