THE excuse of 'damage' for stoppages certainly rules as far as excuses are concerned.

Yesterday, Monday, there were the three usual stoppages on the waterways and each one was caused by 'damage', Keith Gudgin reports.

Leicester Section

In the case of the stoppage on the Leicester at Birstall Lock (45) it was 'damage to the top gate', but how this could be caused we were not told.

The Leicester Section was also closed at Kilby Lock (30), our being informed 'Due to damage''. But again, no details or told what part of the lock was 'damaged'

The stoppage on the Glasson Branch of the Lancaster Canal closing locks 1 to 6  was 'damage to a paddle'.

Not told how caused

Not only was it not told what was the actual damage in all these three stoppages, but how it was caused, though most likely failures.

Last weekend's stoppages on Lock 7 of the Stort, and the Leeds Lock on the Aire & Calder also used the  'damage' excuses.
