NEW plans for Leamington canal side student flats have been re-submitted after original plans were withdrawn.

Revised and re-submitted plans to build hundreds of student flats along the Grand Union Canal in Leamington have been criticised for being 'very similar' to previous proposals that were turned down, Alan Tilbury reports.

Althorpe Street Developments have put forward revised plans for three blocks of flats estimated at a cost of £30 million. Previous plans for the three blocks which include accommodation for about 270 students and units for retail use, had raised more than 100 objections being made to the council.

Councillor, Kristie Naimo. remarked that she could hardly believe the developers have the audacity to resubmitted a scheme so very similar to the previous one they withdrew only a couple of months ago, asking:

“What changes can they have made in this time that would make it more acceptable?

The scheme is supported by the Canal Side Trust that it believes will 'activate a social canal side culture for local people and visitors to the area'.
