Safer on the Avon

THE Avon Navigation Trust (ANT) has dramatically increased its high-tech protection for boaters, and it's proving to be a big hit with nature lovers and fretful riverside dwellers too, writes Juliette Kemp.

Will object to simplistic approach

INCONVENIENT as it may be for Maffi Oxford to have to consider the relevance of bow design, swim length and canal width/depth, the majority of experienced and considerate boaters will strongly object to a 'speed is everything' simplistic approach to wash generation, writes David Lyneham Brown.

Email: Barking dogs

At the risk of upsetting dog owners I believe that the new dog law could be useful for boaters unlucky enough to be moored next to barking dogs.

I'm one of those, and before anyone suggests I move away from the noise, why should I as I like my particular mooring, for being in a particularly windy marina and using my boat it is fairly easy to manoeuvre when coming back in.

The only response I get from the owner when I ask if something can he done is the response 'he is doing his job', which I understand is letting him know when people are about, but which does not wash, he being amongst many others on the jetty. He is a live-aboard, but amongst many who only visit infrequently, unlike myself and one other (also fed up of the noise) there are no other frequent visitors.

But the dog barks at everything that makes any noise or movement. But all it needs is training. I am going to get a copy of the booklet that comes with the new law and see what can be done, as the marina owners are not concerned.

Indifference to patrons

II IS QUITE amazing that with so many pubs going down the tubes in the UK, The Red Lion is not doing itself any favours, particularly as the village now hosts a 249 berth (almost full) marina, writes David Chester.
