DOG walkers have been warned off using the Nottingham Canal towpath into the city as once again a dog has been hit and injured by a speeding cyclist.
It was in August that Jane Fuller's dog (pictured) was struck by a cyclist whilst being walked on the towpath near New Lenton, and needed extensive vet treatment. The cyclist swore at Jane, even though the dog was on a short lead and near to her, then sped off.
Another dog struck
This week another dog has been struck by a cyclist on the same stretch of towpath, with Mrs Barnet telling:
"This man came [on a cycle] like a bat out of hell, and even though there was space for him to pass, he was going so fast he couldn't take the bend and ran into Millie, who was crying in pain, but the vet was able to patch her up.
"There are notices for cyclists to slow down, but they take no notice, as it is obvious they have not left enough time to get to work so are belting along the towpath and woe betides anyone or any animal that gets in their way. I know that a pensioner was knocked over last month.
"My husband comes from Newbury and told me that in the past cyclists had to have permission to ride the towpath and had a licence number fixed to their bikes, so took more care as they knew they could be reported, but now any mad fool can get on a bike and race along a towpath knocking anyone or anything out of their way. I don't know who is in charge but it is clear that no one seems to care."
