The Avon at Bath has claimed yet another victim, and once again a student who had been out drinking.
Henry Burke, 19 years old second year Bath Spa student had been thrown out of a club in Bath with a CCTV record showing him leaving in what is described as a 'huff and a puff', then failed to turn up as a part-time tour guide at Bath Abbey the following day, Friday.
11 drownings in seven years
It was the police that eventually found his body in the Avon around noon on the following day, with a report that this is the 11th drowning in seven years on that stretch of the river, with over half of them students that had been drinking.
Henry had been on a 'night out' with fellow students whom he had previously lived with in student halls of residence, with his girl friend telling that he texted her telling 'by midnight he was completely trashed' and that he could hardly type.
Safety calls after similar deaths have resulted in fencing along the river, as shown above, and better lighting has been installed, but does not prevent anyone being completely out of control from somehow getting into the river, with the resulting tragic consequences.
