Though I cannot help but feel for the poor lady who lost her son who jumped into a Rochdale Canal lock and died, I cannot see how Canal & River Trust putting up notices will help.
During this year I have met many instances of both children and youths swimming in locks, even getting into an argument with a gang who objected to me emptying a lock on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal that I wanted to enter.
They were so aggressive that knowing there was another boat following, I waited until it arrived then three men went 'en masse', and they capitulated and allowed us to empty the lock.
Any notices there would of course have been ignored.
